Crowns/Onlays: In certain situations when a simple filling would not be appropriate, such as larger decay, root canal teeth, or severely worn teeth, a crown or onlay may be required. Our office makes every effort to provide our patients with metal-free options. These types of crowns are usually more tooth conserving, eliminate the risk of allergies to metal, are extremely cosmetic, and lengthen the life of the tooth.
A crown may be recommended in lieu of a filling that would otherwise be so large that there wouldn’t be enough left of the tooth or to prevent a weak tooth from fracturing. Serving to “cap off” a damaged tooth, a crown improves the shape, provides strength, maintains alignment and enhances the appearance.A crown is commonly used to cover the opening left in a tooth following root canal. The tooth is prepared to receive the fitted crown. A post crown might be used when there is very little left of a tooth where a standard crown would have nothing to hold onto. The dentist places a post inside what remains of the tooth in order to gain retention. The peg serves to seat the crown.
Dental Bridge: Despite avoiding the dentist for so long until such finality as having a tooth pulled, the dentist tries not to remove teeth unless it is absolutely necessary. A bridge is used to span the resulting gap to provide support for the surrounding teeth left vulnerable to shifting as they try to fill the empty space. The imbalance from the movement of teeth changes the natural bite leaving the gums susceptible to disease.
Your dentist has a sincere desire to help preserve your jaw structure as long as is possible, which is why the insistence on routine cleaning and proper dental hygiene. A bridge serves as a replacement for lost teeth as an alternative to dentures or implants. There is preparation with a bridge similar to that of a crown, however, there may be as many as three months before placement is achieved to allow time for the gums to shrink following an extraction.Your advantage with Dr. Shawn Matian, D.D.S. is in his specializing in all forms of cosmetic dentistry, his use of cutting edge technology and metal-free fittings.
